This course requires the participants to have an Internet capable device with Adobe Acrobat installed in order to review PDF files. Computers are not readily available for usage on UMBC’s campus during the summer time. It is the responsibility of the student to secure this equipment for the course. Computers, tablets, phones, and cloud based student materials are intended for use OUT OF CLASS studying and preparation, NOT during lecture or skill stations. All curriculum outlines needed for lectures will be provided.

    • Campus Map All students are able to park in Lot 22 for free. Lot 22 is indicated on the map with “Park Here”. There is a bold RED LINE showing the walking path from Lot 22 to the lecture hall.

Several inquiries regarding whether supplemental textbooks would be available for purchase were made. If you want to purchase supplemental course textbooks and materials, we recommend you purchase texts you wish to use PRIOR to the start of the course. Cadaver Lab

Just as all of the rest of the course is 100% mandatory attendance, you MUST attend this portion of the course. The class will be divided into equal sized groups which will be determined on the first day of the course. You will choose which group you are in on the first day of the course. The skills that will be performed/practiced will include but not be limited to:

  • Advance airway adjunct insertion (ET Tube, King Airway, LMA)
  • RSI
  • Retrograde Intubation
  • Tracheostomies
  • Cricothyrotomy
  • IO needle insertion
  • Chest tube insertion
  • Suturing (this is not in the curriculum, but students are allowed to remain after the session to practice this if they desire.)

UMBC WILL NOT be providing transportation to and from the cadaver lab. We highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the provided map and directions PRIOR TO your cadaver lab session day. There is ample free parking at the lab site. If you miss the session for whatever reason, you will not be allowed to test at the end of the course. No make-up sessions for this or any other portion of the course are available.

What to wear:

  • Very comfortable CLOSED TOE shoes. Tennis, running, or sneakers are your best choices. You will be standing on a concrete slab for 4+ hours. There is no place to sit in the Cadaver lab.
  • Wear layers that can be removed as needed. Although the lab is cool, shorts ARE NOT permitted. We recommend wearing scrubs if you have them.
  • Do not wear hairspray or styling gel in your hair. The smell of Formaldehyde will saturate your hair and clothing. Hairspray and styling gel will only make this smell linger longer on your body.
  • Some students have found that the use of Vicks vapor rub on the upper lip, under the nares helps to ease the discomfort of the cadaver odor.
  • During your session, we will provide you with PPE to wear. This will include an apron, shoe covers, gloves, and hair nets. YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN EYE PROTECTION AND MASKS. You will not be allowed to participate in the session without eye protection.
